Hifumi Abe takes a crack at the All-Japan (Open Weight) Championships

After having won two Olympic gold medals, Hifumi Abe has made the bold decision to participate in the open-weight All-Japan Judo Championships, to be held on April 29.
Some champions, after winning the Olympics, take up to a year off. But not Abe, who has been training since the start of the year.
"It's a stage you want to step into as a judoka at least once. I've always had the desire to take on the challenge," Abe said in early March.
Abe has previously opted not to be involved at the All-Japan (Open Weight) Championships because of the potential risk of injury from fighting much bigger opponents.
But now with many accomplishments behind him, and with last year’s Olympic medalists gaining automatic entry into this competition, he has decided to give it a try.
"Getting proper training under my belt is fulfilling," Abe said, as he gears for this event. "I want to take part at the All-Japan Championships as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
